Cultural Burning is about more than just hazard reduction

An Aboriginal Cultural Burn is not guided by a prescription, it is guided by the close relationship that the Aboriginal Cultural Fire Practitioner has with Country and everything in it.

God Botherer

Been held by throat Been held by knife By men who were ‘good’ And their friends who gaslight

Warnings of change – from 1770 to 2020

From seeing the apocalyptic scenes of fierce orange-red glows and pitch-black... surely these fires and their billowing smoke convey more warnings.

Our Mother is hurting without us leading

Neil Morris explains why he started a campaign to help Indigenous peoples displaced by the fires ravaging Australia.

Our Country is Burning.

The only people qualified to manage country, make decisions that protect ecosystems and put community interests above corporate interests are First Nations. The system of governance brought across by colonialists seeking to reinforce their ideology of whiteness and its capitalist agenda has failed and here we are – we know the answers and still the masses continue to vote for the failures.

I’ve stood up against racists most of my life

“Just ignore them” our white foster family advised, as my 8 year old sister stood crying, “just ignore them and they will go away”.

Save NFVPLS

You would likely have seen the media that the National Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services Forum (NFVPLS) has been advised that its $244,000-a-year funding would not be renewed past June 2020.

Another day in the colony…

Australia is a country that prides itself on the well-propagated narrative of being the lucky country with gorgeous beaches, scenic bushland and being the land of the “fair go.” This narrative is something that is heavily protected and there is no scope for criticism in this country without brutal condemnation from the masses of people who live a life of privilege on stolen land.

Queen’s City is gonna steal your hearts like ya stole our land

For far too long Indigenous storytelling has been subject to the white filter, interfering in the authenticity of First Nations storytelling, but the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC) festival ‘Clancestry’ is stripping this layer away.

Prioritise Indigenous Knowledges and embed a western science perspective

Kup Murris is a specialised cooking technique used throughout Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait Islands). An earth oven filled with stones and firewood to cook our meats and seasonal vegetables.  Every step of preparing a Kup Murri is a well thought out process, where each material is carefully selected to ensure our produce and staples are cooked to perfection.

Sovereignty….but what model?

I often speak and write about the importance of Treaty and the model that I think would best achieve the ultimate goal of land rights, self-determination and reparation. In order to pursue any of these avenues, it is pertinent to understand sovereignty and the path to asserting it given it is apparent it is being denied by the government.

Media and white blinkers.

We are told that Aunty ABC is the impartial perspective, the media source that will show us the truth but all too often Aunty ABC disappoints. This time – the reporting of the devastation being experienced by Walpiri mob is reprehensible  – writes Jack Gibson.

An Aboriginal liaison in the Coroner’s Court is just the start, but we need to start somewhere.

Research indicates that as Aboriginal peoples, we are overrepresented in almost every category of reportable death, including violent or suspicious deaths, deaths in State custody, and deaths as a result of police operations.

The future is non-Indigenous

In spite of the recommendations of increasing Indigenous researchers and research across this mid-career funding and ensuring that projects have Indigenous researchers attached to them, the ARC still hasn’t addressed this.

Decolonising Uni? A follow up.

One post, five Blackfullas and a week. That was all it took to decolonise a course with a pro-mission curriculum at a major university. For the last 5 months, I’ve kept asking myself, ‘How did we do it?’ More importantly, I’ve asked, ‘How can we help other mob use this?’

Was KAK really cleared of racism?

We have all seen the panels where a bunch of white ‘personalities’ debate something so far outside the realm of their understanding that it is laughable and yet, it continues, it influences and it pays them to continue saying what they want without basis, without evidence and without any real challenge. They are – after all – on mainstream media platforms voicing their ignorance as though they have some sort of authority to speak on issues.

It’s black and white: racism in Australia is common and accepted

How do we continue to accept a society, a government and a health system that is not responsive to our needs as First Nations peoples?

I love working in Indigenous radio

Working for PAW I get to learn everything that is happening, I have worked with video and radio and with my community telling their stories.
